LIVING LIFE OUT LOUD!

We live in a world of constant and often frightening change and never know of our tomorrow (s). I often ask myself … what will tomorrow bring! Will I have a blessed day with no worries or sickness upon me? Will I be able to cope with what will be passed to me through my day? Will I make a difference?

Finally, it dawns on me that I am so blessed to just be able to wake up and open my eyes each and every morning. I get to experience glorious Life, yet again. I should treasure each day and make everyday day count in my life.

We must not dwell on the past and ruin our present. Our past sometimes can haunt us and make our present day not too enjoyable. If your own past has haunted you and it’s fixable, then go after the problem and resolve it, so that you can live in peace. If it cannot be fixed, then choose to let it go.

As time and moments pass us by, they are then called memories and can be either positive or negative. We all want to have in our lives the best and happiest memories. None of us want to have bad memories of anything, but unfortunately, we will have many of them and disappointments to go along with them. It’s good to put everything in perspective.

I try to live everyday to the fullest and make each day count because there is no guarantee to the length of our individual times on Earth. In my journey, there have been acquired lessons of great value. Treat all people with respect and kindness. Turn the other cheek as hard as it might be. Learn to love and respect yourself, because without that, you will have a hard time loving and respecting others.

Really appreciate what you have in your Life and don’t take anything for granted. We can all improve the quality of our existence with some extra hard work to achieve a personal goal. However, if that goal is not achieved, the gain is in the personal knowledge that all effort was put forth in the venture of trying.

I try to make it a habit to glance into the sky and say thanks for all things in Life… exactly as given. My days are rewarding; yet challenging, happy; while melancholy at times, enlightening; even at this point in my life, and exhausting; while at the same time… I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Each day we experience is as different and individual as each one of us. May we all choose to live it well.

HELPING OTHERS… even when you feel you have no more to give. You do!

Living on Tybee Island, Georgia for the past eight years has taught me much. Each and every day I learn more and more about: life, people, and more importantly myself. Having gone through the humbling effects of Hurricane Irma the past few weeks has shown me firsthand about the importance of God, Nature, and Man. Without all three working in harmony… we would be nowhere. This natural “cleansing”, if you will, by the first two powers shows that Man alone isn’t “… all that, ”(as my students used to say).

Lately, it appears that with what’s going on in the world a little natural destruction was in order. Who hasn’t been annoyed, and I’ll also say embarrassed, by the Political Arena? In the states affected most by Hurricane Irma: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina,- we have had a diversion of sorts. But this piece is not so much of Politics, Business, Loss and/or Profit associated with this latest natural disaster… but rather of people and how we can be better at what we do and how we do it. Now, we are dealing with mass destruction in Puerto Rico and Mexico.

My state of Georgia hasn’t taken a direct hit from a major hurricane in more than a century (1898) and only four minor storms made landfall here during the 1900s. Georgia’s three worst hurricanes all occurred during the month of August and all came ashore in the Savannah vicinity in: 1881, 1893 and 1898.  So, choosing Tybee Island a laidback, eclectic, and accepting place to live and write was a no-brainer.

I could go to the Atlantic Ocean to walk, write, and pray anytime. Imagine my surprise when after one hundred years plus… we encountered Hurricane Matthew and then Hurricane Irma within eleven short months.   What was God’s message for me and for others.  I was not mentally prepared for what I saw when returning to the island. Many people lost homes, cars, and all their worldly possessions. Huge two and three hundred year old trees with 3 and 4 feet circumferences lay across roofs and streets. Water stood, and still stands, everywhere; the mosquitoes start biting in the early morning hours. I had seen this happening on the television to others, but now this was mine to embrace.

The idea that helping others is part of a meaningful life has been around for thousands of years. Aristotle wrote that finding happiness and fulfillment is achieved “by loving rather than in being loved.” Yet today, many of us seem to be struggling to find meaning by gathering up achievements and often spending so much time at work, the gym, or even alone, that we’re cut off from other people. Have we been headed down the wrong path? (Hmmm. “Path” the word used to describe the direction of a hurricane.) New research is providing more and more evidence that kind and helpful behavior causes us to feel that our lives are more meaningful and discovering what we can do to reap those benefits.

Psychologists have distinguished between two types of mental/physical well being: hedonic well being (a sense of happiness in life) and eudemonic well being (a sense of meaning and purpose in life). Although “happiness” and “meaning” in Life overlap significantly, researchers suspected that helping others is especially crucial to developing a sense of meaning. University researchers have found that having strong social connections, and not necessarily with friends, was important for both our happiness and meaningfulness in living. This has been so evident in the aftermath of the hurricane as workers from many states have come to help and aid those in need. When I thanked an American Red Cross worker for their help yesterday, they replied, “It is my pleasure.”

Does helping others promote a sense of “meaning?”

But, does behaving in a kind and helpful way actually cause us to feel that our lives have more meaning? While it may seem intuitive that helping others goes along with a meaningful life, it’s possible to imagine a variety of different explanations for this. Perhaps, those who feel like their lives have meaning are more motivated to help others or perhaps, some other factor (for example, being religious) causes people to be helpful and experience more meaning in their life.

Do:

  • Random Acts of Kindness (RAK s): Feel happier by doing things for others. (They don’t even have to know it was you; it’s more fun that way!)
  • Saying “Hello” and asking, “How are you doing?” or similar. How often do people pass each other in silence or not even a glance?)
  • Loving-Kindness thoughts/ prayers: Strengthens feelings of kindness and connection toward others.
  • Reminders of Connectedness: A subtle way to induce kindness, particularly in kids. (It’s never too early to start kids on “doing” things for others. As they get older they will rarely be the ones with their hands out to get something they haven’t earned.”
  • Encouraging Kindness in Children: Praise kids in ways that make them more kind to others. This is the best of “paying it forward.”
  • Start small. You don’t need to begin with grand gestures; even small ones make a difference, but do something for others everyday!
  • Make your helping count. It turns out that not all types of giving have the same effects on us. In particular, helping others can be especially effective when you can see the specific impact that your actions have. Even someone smiling back at us, who normally doesn’t, means we are having an impact!

Take time to thank others. Expressing gratitude towards others can be a giving act too. When others take time to do something nice for you, making them feel appreciated can help build your relationship with them and make your life more meaningful.

Make our “to do” List shorter. There is always someone/ someplace that needs immediate attention over our own personal needs. Prioritize!

Amazingly, I personally have beaten all the odds.   I am so blessed with minimal loss, but in doing so gained an entirely new perspective on the power of Humans and kindness in giving of ourselves as we join forces and struggle to clean up, help, and encourage those less fortunate.

LIVING LIFE OUT LOUD

We live in a world of constant and often frightening change and never know of our tomorrow (s). I often ask myself … what will tomorrow bring! Each day we experience is as different and individual as each one of us.  May we all choose to live it well.  YOU GOT THIS!

Florida and Tybee Island, Ga are still in need of assistance after Irma!

Being “involved” in improving the lives of others is not anything about self promotion or a pat on the back.  Hopefully, our motives are pure and we really are concerned with making the Earth a better place for all.  After all, we are just passing through and this is only a temporary home. However, what we choose to do while we are here on Earth matters greatly.

It matters little whether we volunteer at: church, school, or community OR we quietly give of time, expertise, or finances that no one is aware of but ourselves.  However, what matters is that we all do something!   I believe this applies so much to the immediate test of Natural Disasters of our friends, families, and loved ones in Texas and vicinity.

Even a small donation of 10 dollars (or two cups of Starbuck’s) can help those who have lost  so much or everything.  www.AmericanRedCross.org .

Many of us feel empty…  or that there is something missing in our lives.   How wonderful it would be if that void was filled with the only thing that heals… helping others!  Perhaps, this could be an avenue of healing that doctors could use on many patients in many venues.  I’m just saying.

No matter how difficult our own life is… there is always someone who is suffering and challenged more.  This is at the core of my personal philosophies; it is always necessary to volunteer and help others. Always!  For most of my life I have been involved with young people.  There are many projects and organizations to which I devote my time.  At first, while I was in college… it was to figure  out who I was and why I had survived a far from “healthy” childhood.  When I stepped back and examined it more closely…  it became clear that there were concrete ways to improve life as given… not only for myself, but for others as well.

Working with the  Special Olympics has been part of my life for over two decades.  Here were individuals who embraced  not what they don’t have or will never be, but rather in small triumphs and personal success. They are role models of integrity.  It was with this organization that I first involved my “unteachable/unreachable” (not my words, but rather from the ad in the New York Times),  students.  It never failed to amaze me that these not so young high school students (sometimes as old as 21) somehow in the end … “got it.”  Their own stints with Incarceration, Probation, Drug Abuse were all self chosen. The challenges given to others in life, sometimes are not.

BUT ALL HUMANS ARE CHALLENGED!       The students who fought me the most when I announced, “We will all be helping at this year’s Special Olympics” were the ones who absolutely gleamed with pride at the end of the day of serving.  They were also the first to ask if they could do it again, next year. Helping others is something everyone can do.  Everyone!  It is the healing and answer for everything.

I am sharing some of my own personal experience only as an example.  Everyone is challenged in life.  It can be the loss of a home, job, or a loved one; and those  can happen again and again. It can be a physical, emotional, or social affliction of a family member… or ourselves.  It can also be loss of direction in life that brings with it a profound loneliness and isolation.   Sometimes, this is drug and/or alcohol related.

What I am suggesting is that by not focusing on ourselves, and instead focusing on those around us that need attention and help in improving their situations… Life is Best!

But, here’s the warning:

DON’T JUST SAY/THINK YOU WILL HELP IMPROVE THE LIVES OF OTHERS… Really do it!

Imagine the world then?

SPIRIT UNBROKEN… IRMA!

OK, so at this present time I am wondering if I am able to be “positive?”  After all , I do write a Positive Life Blog.  I live in an area of Georgia (USA) which is being blasted for the second time with a Major Hurricane (IRMA) in less than a year!  What?  What is so ironic is that this area along the coast had not been hit with a major storm in close to a century and then came Hurricane Matthew, last October 2016.  Now, eleven months later, again. My island of Tybee was hit hard and I was not prepared mentally for what met my sight when we returned, last year.

The island was “wasted” on some parts of it and other parts were untouched… or touched with a much gentler hand.  For some reason, insurance companies no longer assist to the full extent of coverage with a named storm.  That was something not well known. It still isn’t.  Even if you had “minimal” damage as we did, to be expected to have thousands, and I do mean thousands, of extra dollars set aside for repairs, replacement, and repainting… was unrealistic.  There were actually folks who were wishing their entire home had been washed away/destroyed because then that would have been covered!  That’s disheartening for the human spirit.

During Matthew evacuation, we travelled clear across the state to Alabama. It was a bumper to bumper 13 hour drive.  With Irma, we have  travelled north to Atlanta, bumper to bumper for hours.  In both cases my positive spirit was happy to visit places that I had never been to. The phrase “the calm before the storm,’ played over and over in my mind. With each evacuation, I can’t lie, I am really afraid.  Not so much about safety, but rather for the loss of home and property.  But then it dawns on me, it is just that… physical things and … stuff!  Both times, the two days right before the storm were sunny and bright. Everyone was doing “touristy” things.  I saw attractions of arboretums, waterfalls, parks, and shops that other wise I would not have seen.  I was enchanted and thrilled with each thing.  How could this be?

The Human Spirit is one of remarkable resilience.  Here in Atlanta, I am blessed to be staying at the new home of my daughter.  Who, until two months ago, resided in Florida in one of the worst hit areas by Irma.  It indeed is a small miracle that she now is in the very place where I am seeking refuge.  To get to spend this time with her where it almost appears that I am the “child” seeking comfort and solace, (rather than the other way around), teaches me that the circle of life is indeed real.  She is the “mother” that I never had.  Ironic, but true.

I am nervous, yet anxious, to go back home to Tybee Island once we are given the go ahead.  Yet, this time away in evacuation has been of great value and life lessons in love. I have laughed hard, cried secretly, and commiserated openly.  But… there is nothing better than people taking care of others.  What is witnessed on television, first hand, and via the Internet is heartening.  Human beings are: warm, caring, unselfish, and extraordinarily resilient.  I have life, love, and memories.

My spirit is unbroken, as always.
